Q & A with Gene McDonald
We took the opportunity to catch up with one of Australia’s leading Rodeo Pick Up men, Gene McDonald, who’s definitely a man of many words. We find out how his impressive career began and some of his fondest moments in rodeo. Along with Pick Up, Gene is focused on his Steer Wrestling and competing with his family.
Wrangler (WR): How did it all begin for Gene, tell us the story of how you became a Rodeo Pick Up Man?
Gene McDonald (GM): I got started in rodeos with friends when I was 14, I started out in the steer ride.
WR: How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
GM: Pick Up Man, Father, Husband & Cowboy
WR: Who have been your biggest influences?
GM: That would be Gary McPhee
WR: Most memorable moment in Picking Up or Steer Wrestling?
GM: Placing in a round at Mount Isa Rodeo in the Steer Wrestling and Winning the SCRC Pick Up Man of the Year.
WR: Tell us a Fun Fact about you?
GM: Happy to help others.
WR: What advice would you like to give the younger generations who are interested in Rodeo Picking Up?
GM: Practice hard, push through the tough times.
WR: What is your best fashion tip?
GM: Wranglers go with everything!
WR: What’s coming up for the remainder of 2023?
GM: I will be at the major rodeos as a pickup man with my team of horses, while chasing my spot at the finals in the Steer Wrestling.
