Q & A with Tim McCarthy
We sat down with champion campdrafter, Tim McCarthy. He’s most known for his success in the campdraft arena, but did you know he’s also been highly successful in the cutting pen? We get the low down on his success throughout his years of competing.
Wrangle (WR): How did it all begin for Tim, tell us the story of how you got into Campdrafting?
Tim McCarthy (TM): My dad was campdrafting well before I came along. We’ve always done our cattle work on horseback, and it was just a natural progression to compete as well.
WR: How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
TM: Realist, Calm, Quiet & Low Stress
WR: Who have been your biggest influences?
TM: My dad, Ken was a huge influence on me in my younger years, and I’ve really enjoyed learning all I can from Ian Francis as well.
WR: Most memorable moment in Campdrafting?
TM: In the campdraft arena, it would be have to be coming second in the Canning Downs on Le Storm at the Warwick Gold Cup Campdraft. But in the Cutting pen, it is definitely winning the NCHA Non Pro Derby on One Roan Peptos. He was such a cool horse to ride and I was very lucky that Ian & Dad let me ride him.
WR: Tell us a Fun Fact about you?
TM: I was born on Gladstone (NSW) campdraft weekend and now I am the president of Gladstone (NSW) campdraft.
WR: What advice would you like to give the younger generations starting out in Campdraft?
TM: Short reins, long arms means a long life. Ride wide, have fun, it’s only a sport.
WR: What is your best fashion tip?
TM: If you’re wearing Wrangler or Twisted X, you can’t go wrong.
WR: What’s coming up for the remainder of 2023?
TM: Hopefully more of the same, campdraft with the family.
